Is my Blue Crayfish male or female?(Photo)

I don't know if this is good enough to tell. Its never done this before or since, so fat chance on another shot, and I'm scared I may hurt the shell if I handle it. >< He/she got back down again after the first shot right as it dawned on me to snap a photo of his/her belly. I've been told how to tell, but being told and seeing are two different things since I'm new to it. lol And please excuse the ugly algae bloom, sorry about that(it doesn't look it, but it is an algae bloom and not bacterial, the water is green when removed, been fighting it for a couple weeks!). I'll get it soon, fry should help.

See, got down, but I am hoping maybe someone knows how to tell from another angle..

Side view...It looks like it's got a damaged leg, but it's not. lol S/he's just scratching the belly. :3

You won't hurt it by grabbing the carapace. Just flip it over and get a picture of underneath - it's the only way to tell. Males have a couple of extra "legs" located between the 2nd and 3rd legs (IIRC), and females have a couple of pits in the same place, for the "legs" to go. Cannot tell from those pics.

That's such a bad idea for me. I'll see if I can get someone else to do it for me, or if I can get him into a clear container or something. lol I have some...problems with my nerves. I would likely smash him. I do that often enough with adult snails I no longer pick them up either unless I can get them to crawl on me. >< I should also mention I'm still a bit jumpy around crayfish which would likely make it worse. When I was a kid a big one about broke my thumb, though Baby Blue likely couldn't do me any real damage, he's only about three and a half inches long. lol

You can net the crayfish and put it in a glass cup. It'll try (and fail) to climb out, allowing you to get a good shot.

I was wrong - the male sex organs are not located where the females are. Males are at the base of the last pair of legs.

I like the glass cup idea. That I can do, I think. Just need to find one big enough.

Sorry it took so long. These are the best I could get, sorry. Couldn't get a photo through the glass right, and in here it was hard to get the right angle, it often stood in the corner looking mushed and did not try to climb out of either. lol Now that I got a good look, I'm thinking female, what do you guys think? Mine is just a wild guess from graphs. LOL

Are those photos not good enough to tell from?

No. See if you can get a full frontal shot. I think using a glass would be easiest because it will stand the crayfish up on end. OR, use the container you used in the other pics, but get the picture from directly underneath, and closer.
