I have an evil snail!!!

So, about a month ago Bob the Snail (the first) died, and last week my dad went out and surprised me with a new snail. This one is white/ivory and only about 3/4 of an inch. Petsmart has them labeled as Mystery snails, but you never know with Petsmart- I guess it could be an Apple snail (BTW, what is the difference between Mystery and Apple snails?).

Over the weekend he was going all the way up (like, out of the water up) but he didn't fall down. Today Bob the Second keeps going to the top of the aquarium (about an inch or so below the water line) and falling down (on purpose!!!). I googled it, and I found someone talking about Apple snails hunting their fish by going to the top/floating and then falling down on top of the fish and eating them. I just laughed at the thought of my little Bob doing such a thing, and when I turn to look at the tank, one of my new fish barely got away from his last fall!

He is totally freaking me out! So, my question is-

Why is he doing this? He's not trying to eat my fish, is he?

With the evidence that you have found online it definetely sounds like he is trying something. I'd just keep a very good eye on him and the actions of your fish, if at any point you see him attacking a fish and succeeding (you say that at one point one of your fish barely escaped) just be ready with a net!

I have a mystery snail that does this all the time and he has never tried to catch a fish its more like they climb to the top cleaning algae then take the easy way down by letting go and falling instead of crawling down. ; )

Apple snails / aka golden mystery snails (Pomacea) don't eat fish. Correction, they will eat fish, but only the fish that are dead and rotting on the bottom!

Ok, thanks DKRST! :)

@Calmwaters- At first I did think he was just lazy, so I'm glad to get a confirmation on that :) My last snail never dropped, unless I poked him or something... I mean, I guess he probably would've if I touched his actual body, even if I needed him to get off the side of the tank and I pulled at him he would never come off!!!

So, thanks to everyone who responded! He hasn't done it yet today, but I just put him back into the tank (I took him out to feed him- my fish always steal his food!) and he's up at the top again... getting oxygen? Idk what he does up there, he sticks his head back so his mouth is at the water level and opens and closes his mouth, but it sure looks weird!

Mine does that to exspecially if he is near the top at feeding time so he can get some of the flake food that I feed the fish. ; )

Do you have oxygenated water? (ie air pump or surface o the water is disrupted by wyer falling from filter)

@Reece- I don't have an air pump, but the filter pushes all sorts of bubbles into the water.

@Calmwaters- Yes, right after I posted that, I caught him with a flake on his, uh, whatever that is... it was more like his foot thing, but, hey- as long as he's eating, I don't care how it gets in there!!! Lol
