That sorta seems like a little bit of a morbid question, i know.

I've got a tank that i'm going to take down and it's currently got a ton of snails in it, which is part of the reason it's going byebye, to rid the infestation of snails.

Can a snail drown if it's unable to reach the surface for air? I just had the thought earlier of if i kept them from getting up to the surface, they would drown. I have acouple pieces of plexiglass that fit quite nicely with a little bit of work would sit on the water or be pushed down slightly to remove the ability for anything under to get past. If I were to try that and let's say i got it to work perfectly so that there's no air pockets at all, how long would you say it would take for them to drown?

Just a thought i had that i thought i would ask about lol

Why not just get an Assassin snail to clean up for you?

I'm going to end up getting one in a few weeks.. I've had one before but it would crawl up to the top of the tank and just fall down, it wouldn't get knocked down - it would just fall, i watched it do that on it's own a few times and eventually i think it just killed itself from falling.

I'm just curious how long it'll take for a snail to drown, i could probably conduct my own experiment but i'm curious if anyone happens to know how long it would take.

I'm not really sure of that answer.

What kind of water do you have, perhaps it wasn't right for that snail?

What type of snails are we talking about?

I think there are better ways to deal with a snail infestation, no matter the type. If you're tearing the tank down you could even do something quick like flooding it with hot or very cold water to put the snail into shock, or just manually removing all the visible ones and proceeding with the tear down.
