It's great that you pay attention to your tank.

I have had snails lay on the bottom of the tank for what seemed like an eternity.

You can always use the "nose" test. If he hasn't move in a day or two smell him. No jolke, pick it up and smell it. If he really stinks, he's gone. Or you can use the "touch" method. pick it up out of the tank and touch the shoe or "door". If he pulls it tighter, he's still alive.

I once thought my apple snail was just resting, he did it every once in awhile went to clean the tank and when I touched his shell with the vac his particles exploded out of the shell and made a mess of my tank. It was horrible and smelled BAD!!!

The algae wafers should do the trick, they will also eat anything that the fish don't eat, I believe brocolli and romain lettuce is good for them. I also dose my tank with liquid calcium so they keep nice shells. I'm not sure on how many you can put in your tank. I know with ramshorns you need 2.5 gallons per snail
