Golden Mystery Snail turning brown

Iv noticed my mystery snail has got brown lines on his shell, I think it is algae and was wondering how would I remove it?

Also, I am looking to buy another mystery snail, I want to eventually breed them and was thinking if I were to breed say a pink and with a golden or ivory with a golden what colour would the baby snails be?

Thanks

You could wipe it off with a wet paper towel. For long term (if you didn't feel like keeping up on it)...I would recommend algae eating shrimp (red cherry shrimp) but looking at the tanks you have posted your fish would eat them. My RCS are always cleaning the shells of my snails.

Hope this helps some...

My ghost shrimp like to eat off the snails shell :)

I personally haven't seen Red Cherry's do it. But, I have seen other snails crawl on on another snail's shell too.

Snails & Salt

I would like to add a little aquarium salt to my betta's tank - I also have a golden mystery snail in there with him (5 gallons, filtered, heated). WOuld that hurt the snail if I put a teaspoon or so in there??

I am not familiar with golden mystery snails. I know nerites can adapt from freshwater to saltwater. It also depends on what type of salt you are adding to the aquarium...some salts contain copper and other additives and that is TOXIC to invertebrates.

nope, as long as it's designated as aquarium salt. I put some in my tank (more than a teaspoon) and have had no problems,.

Welsh, please post pics of the shell with the brown coloring. Is it the new shell growth or the old one?

Neither bettas nor mystery snails appreciate salt. I don't think there's any reason to use salt in long-term situations in freshwater tanks. It's useful to treat ich (with certain species of fish) but otherwise there's really no need for it.

Well I brushed him lightly with a soft toothbrush and he looks like a completely different snail now, what I did notice though was the part of the shell where the snail comes out of is snapping away, its really quite brittle. I'm scared to start messing with the calcium, etc because I dont know how the other fish in the tank will take to it but I also don't want the snails shell to get worse
