Double checking on possibly scared Nerite above waterline

Hello all; I wanted to double check on something with my new Nerite. He's been at the upper right corner above the waterline for awhile now, a day, at least, and I will be checking the water quality at petsmart, but in the meantime, I saw my Betta Zeus, harassing the poor guy. He kept pecking at him. I think he may have tried to eat a probisci at one point. I was rather disappointed, as I hoped my guy would be docile enough to leave him alone. Not at all, though. I tried putting a baby apple snail in there too, and he flipped him right over right away!

Anyhow, I was wondering if he's spending all that time up there because he's spooked from Zeus? If my water quality is OK, how should I proceed? Just leave him be until he comes back down? I don't know how long they can stay up there before one should grow concerned. I thought I read somewhere that they can enter dormant states. It's been particularly humid and hot here, too, so I'm thinking that may have raised the temperature of the tank a bit, too.

...and all this being said, I don't think I'll try anything with any of my bettas anymore, in terms of mixing anything in. They are all simply too aggressive. My veil tail, Crimson Dynamo, tore both of my ghost shrimps apart :( And I'm in doubt right now for the nerite. Personally, for an invertebrate tank, now that I know better, I'd like to get a 3 gallon with established water, one baby apple snail, one nerite, and two ghost or cherry red shrimp. Cherry Red Shrimps are nice, but I don't think I'd try to mix them in with Ghost Shrimp, as they are so aggressive, and, from what I understand, bigger.

The ghosties crack me up! One of my ghost shrimps wasn't backing down over an algae wafer when an apple snail that must have been three times his size was going for it too! This same little dude was scurrying around grabbing at others food even though there were 2 shrimp pellets and the wafer, more than enough for everyone! They are indeed territorial. It was so funny to see him headbutt the ghost shrimp out of the way for food in the beginning when he was establishing the pecking order for feeding...lol I called the other guy headbutt haha

I nudged it a bit and it is indeed still alive. It is just below the waterline now, but it still won't move. I'm thinking it's not the water, as it would have moved up again. I think the betta is scaring it off. Alas, I have no other tank to put him in at present :(
