Do apple snails need heat and filteration?

I have heard these can live in tropical and coldwater aquariums and was just curious to know whether apple snails can live without heat or filteration?

Another question, I got a baby apple snail last week and today part of the opening of the shell snapped off, I have added crushed eggshells to the tank and was wondering how long it will take for the shell to harden?

Thanks :)

They can live without heat, provided your house doesn't get too cold, but they really should have some type of filtration as they can be pretty messy.

Do you have a picture of your snail? If the damage is extensive it might not repair and the snail may die.

I do have a filter but not a heater, the tank reachs 80-85 in the day and 60 -65 in the night but I will be getting a heater for the winter.

As for the baby snail, the shell has grown back but its really thin, I have placed cuttlefish bone in the tank and I do feed them veggies that are high in calcium but I guess only time will strengthen it

Ideal temperature for apple snails: 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit.
