I've just bought an apple snail from the pet shop but I had a look on the internet and it says they're not suited for planted aquariums as they eat the plants. I've got loads of plants in my tank and wasn't warned about this by the man who sold it to me. Should I take the snail back or will it be ok?
thank you for the advice, the apple snail's been in for a few hous now and he seems to be just eating all the alge, but he was hanging off a leaf, i dont think he's eaten any of it? can they eat cucumber? if anyone else could give me any advice aswell id be grateful?
I'm fairly new to snail keeping as well. I feed mine zuccini, cucumber, algae wafers, spinach and I supplement with half a calcium pill every other day. They will also eat whatever fish food accumulates on the bottom. I had a problem with my gold snail's shell getting thin because my water is not hard enough. They need calcium and hard water to keep their shells in good shape. I have live plants in my smaller tank and my gold snail will clean the algae off the leaves but the only leaves he munches on are the dead or dying leaves on my crypts. He seems to leave the anubias, java fern and anacharis alone. I've read that Brigs do not eat plants but Canas do. However, most snails you buy at the pet stores I believe are usually Brigs. There are some members on this forum who have alot more experience with snails than I do. Hopefully they can chime in also.
Definitely wander over to www.applesnail.net to identify your snail. Most likely it's a brigs and you have nothing to worry about. If it turns out to be a cana, then take it back.
Your snail is a pomecea bridgesii, brigs for short. It will not eat your plants. Your tank is safe. Also called a golden apple snail and mystery snail.
Thanks for all your help : ) my snail has not eaten any plants but is instead happilly eating away all the algae. I'm thinking of getting another one now as I have quite a wide tank so it will look nice with a couple of them in : )
