Returning to Fish After 3 Decades!!

Howdy new friends,
I've been busy tending to my profession (I'm a teaching psychiatrist) and my family, (husband of one, Daddy of five, Granddad of three) and finally I'm ready to reenter the marvelous world of Freshwater Tropical Fish.
A month ago my home was hit by a tornado. We are and will be in a motel for another month but this is an opportunity to set up tanks in my basement and become a fish guy again. Oh how I have missed this special microcosm of the world.
I will gladly swap shrink counsel for up to date aquarium wisdom. I am eagerly awaiting a chance to meet new friends and catch up on thirty years of progress, just in case the hobby has advanced since 1975!!
OK, I admit, I need HELP!! What is LED lighting for instance. LOL.
I am lucky enough to live in God's own wonderland, the gentle mountains of NE Tennessee.

Hi there Paul. Welcome to TFK. I had to laugh at your comment about things having changed a bit since you last kept fishL. It's amazing how little available information people had 20 or 30 years ago.

Tell us what you'll be setting up in the basement :)

Sorry about the tornado. That's pretty awful :(

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Welcome to TFK, DocK. It's great you're getting back into the hobby. After a day of listening to everyone else's problems (I know you are teaching but I'm sure alot of students are hitting you up for free evals, lol) it's nice to Zen out in front of a nicely done aquarium(s). More details, please.
A tornado? Yikes. At least it was able to afford you an oppurtunity to get your feet (and hands) wet again!

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

Joey, thanks a heap for your response. I'm feeling a bit lost on the site, not sure about how to put up a message or respond. I looked for responses to my initial post yesterday, saw that there were several but couldn't find them until I checked my emails. Is that how it works? Also, is it out of protocol to ask for direct email?
I don't have a tank set up yet. Figured I'd read up and prepare before I jump back into things. I'm planning to set up a very large fresh water tank plus a few support tanks.
About the tornado, trees crushed one end of my house knocking the chimney into our bedroom. This caved into the living room and all of that crashed into the basement. Flooring, ceilings, elect, plumbing, roof, furnature, etc oh my what a mess.
Can you direct me to a good article about LED lighting? I've heard good things but it seems very expensive.
Many thanks Joey,
Paul

Hi and welcome. The internet is a great source of information but it can also be a great source of confusion as there are so many conflicting opinions on every topic. We'll love to see your pictures after you are back home and have set up your tank(s). Sorry about the tornado.

Hey Romad,
Thanks for your note. I was once an avid freshwater guy but . . you know. Now, it looks like the re-do of the house will force certain changes and allow for a start over. I'm jumping all of this and insisting on reestablishing my hobby. I do not have a tank set up, thought I'd read up and start the three decade catch up first. (I'm not smart but I did spend the last five weeks in a Holiday Inn Express!)
I am planning to set up one or two large steel tanks with glass only on the front. Circa 400 to 800 gal with support tanks too. I know, Whoa! Anyway, that's the dream. Now, comes the reality.

Hi Tanker, thanks for your note. I'm looking forward to this in a big way. Pics will be forthcoming when I get started.
Do you know of a good source of info about steel tanks with only one glass front?
Paul

If you are set up to get email notification when there is a new post on threads you are subscribed to, you get email notification. When you log on to check new responses, click "User CP" (top left). The threads you are subscribed to that have new responses are listed there.

It's probably not a good idea to post your email address on here because all of the spammers may get it and you'll be inundated with junk mail, but I don't know that it is against the rules or anything.

Aunt Kymmie,
Thanks so much for your kind note. I am a member of our psychiatry department's faculty. I have students and residents with me during my day seeing patients in a hospital. It's crazy work but somebody has to do it. I mostly do clinical teaching but some classroom too. I also do forensic psychiatry, an entirely different kettle of fish.. . . or maybe I need another metahpor!
I may need help in learning to properly operate the site with all this fancy stuff. I'm new to forum tools too.
I assume that the responses to Joey and the other friends are posted for everyone? If not, I'll need to keep it in mind. I want to avoid duplication if possible.
Paul
