Newbie here, need lots of advise.

Just got a fresh water 55 gal tank with nothing other than the lights and water heater.
Where do I start?...., what kind of filters, plants, etc....
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, silentwizard! You've come to the right place for help. Lots of very nice, helpful members here. I'm envious, wish I was setting up another tank!

Start first with what type of fish you want, then go from there. So what do you like?

hello and welcome.
and post pictures of setting it up too if you can.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Welcome to the forum! I think you'll very quickly find yourself trying to choose between many different options rather than trying to come up with one.

Put together a wish list, list the measurements of your tank to get input on which filters will work, and read up on the Nitrogen cycle. You'll have to decide whether to go with fishless or fish in cycling.

Welcome to the forum.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
