the bigger the tank the easier to keep clean, you really should get an API Master Test Kit and let the tank cycle 1st (see other posts) and when cycled leave it for 2 weeks after to add fish slowly, then leave it for another 2 weeks for the tank to settle down again, also try to get a darker substrate as fish will be more comfortable, a couple of floating plants will not go astray, would be interested to see a journal so as we may be able to assist you in each step of the way, the important thing at this stage, is to write down what you want in the tank then research and possibly join a few forums, and speak to LFS (local fish shop's) also a good site to go to is aquadvisor.com
to assist re: stocking the tank, but make a list of what you want in the tank then go to the website, to see what is compatible with what. Most important advice I amm able to give is research and patience is the key to keeping an aquarium, and welcome to the forum
