yea i need to pick up a test kit. my local lfs does it for free so i just went there for the first time today to have it tested. having it tested again tomorrow. he said all my levels were fine to start putting fish in, and didnt say anything about having to continue to cycle.

When I cycled with fish (I will go fishless the next time!) there were times I was going a water change every day for three days in a row. You want to avoid ever seeing red gills, gasping, etc. by testing your water and performing a water change BEFORE your fish are suffering.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

the sad part is the LFS will tell you your water is "fine" so you think its alright to add fish, then when they die, you come back to buy more. dont get me wrong some fish stores are good, but you do have to keep in mind that they all are a business. having your own kit also ensures that they are accurate. what im saying is, what does the kid at the fish store care if he misses a drop or missing counting an extra one. just my opinion on doing tests myself.

hello and welcome.
your tank is lovely.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

bought a test kit today, the reading for ammonia is less than .25mg/l. im saying this because it is almost to the color of 0 but im not sure. testing nitrites now. edit: <.03mg/l

i think the water needs to be a little more harder. kh is comin in at 5*dh. i need to get that to about 10 for the RTS right?

I'm really happy you bought your own test kit. As OF2F says doing it yourself is the only way you'll know that the tests were done accurately.

i listen to any and all advice given. and it saves me the trip to the lfs. although ive been there twice today. first to get the kit and a smaller air stone. and then back to buy a new air pump and picked up 3 gtbs. they are doing good and get very active at times. now my only problem is raising the hardness

so i have 3 tiger barbs, should i add 3 more now? 2 of them swim around after each other and the one seems to drag behind and chill by himself. i think more of them will make them all active

im in the middle of cycling, well sorta. nitrite is <.3mg/l and ammonia was .25 today but i just did a 10% change. like i said it wasnt a new tank so i had some bacteria from the filter
