Hello ! I'm Pamela from Portsmouth in England.
I used to keep goldfish when I was younger but now, after visiting a lovely little fishery, I want to start keeping tropical fish. My mom used to keep them when she was younger, so she's also eager to set up an aquarium.
I personally like betta fish (Siamese fighters) but my mom likes guppies, tetras and damios. So we have to find some common ground and decide first what fish we want, and how many we can have in what size tank.
Looking forward to talking to you,
Many thanks,

Pamela :)

Hello Pamela

Welcome to the forum. As for choosing fish, why not do both? You can have a small(ish) betta tank that will fit just about anywhere and then a community tank for your other fish selections.

Yes, we're hopeless enablers here :)

I was actually thinking that XD
The fishery nearby has got a new shipment of bettas and they are so beautiful. was thinking of getting a little 6 gallon tank for him and maybe some tetras or coyrdoras to keep him company.

My mom wants to get guppies, mollies, danios, swordtails etc. and I don't think they'd get on very well with a betta.

Welcome... I like guppies too...not so much because they are pretty and multiply like rats.. but because they eat algae... infact better than any algae eater i have ever had.. and they never out grow thier tanks..

Welcome to the forum! It'd be an awesome idea to let your betta spread his fins in a bigger tank. Just as long as you keep up with maintenance and do your research, you'll have a fun and beautiful community tank set up. I hope you enjoy this hobby as much as the people on this forum.

Welcome to the forum, its a great resource. I wouldn't mix swordtails or guppies with betta. Long fins are too tempting for hungry livebearers. Go for 2 t,anks so mom can have her classic tropicals and you can have your betta. Oh, you also need a third tank for quarantine. And might as well get #4 for babies from your livebearers. You'll probaly want a fifth tank soon after that.... then 6 and 7... .
Seriously though, if your looking to keep a few different species in the same tank, I would look at 40 gallon minimum size. Most of the species you mentioned are best kept in groups of at least 5 or so, so if you want a few different schools your looking at 55-75 gallons ideally. Of course a few swordtails or danios don't need a tank that big , but I would go for at least 40 gal. In any case just for the stability.
Best of luck to you and your fish
