New to fish and fish forums

Hey there, names Alex and i've just decided i'd join this forum so i can enjoy a hobby with the professionals of this hobby. Unfortunately i know absolutely nothing about fish which is why i'm going to wait until i feel completely comfortable about diseases, care, what to do about pregnant fish and just everything i'll need to know before even looking for some!

So basically i've got a 54 litre tank in my room sat close to my bed now, i've set the temperature at 24 degrees and it's got several plants, filter, heater and even a little broken boat (in case they don't want to see my face when i wake up) I've took a fair amount of water from the fish shop close to me and filled the rest with tap water. It's got gravel at the bottom and i've got the filter working quite powerfully i believe at the minute since all the little bubbles around my fish tank have appeared.

I hope i've not made too many people cringe thinking what am i doing! lol.

So, to quickly put it. Hello everybody :) could i have your help :)

Alex

Hi Alex, welcome to the forum! We're glad you've decided to join us. The beneficial bacteria needed to maintain a healthy aquarium doesn't live in the water column but in the substrate, filter media, etc. Your tank will need to cycle before you add fish, if you are going to do a fishless cycle. Below is an article that explains the process. If your LFS let you have some of their water they may be happy to give you a handful of gravel to seed your tank. Have a read of the article, gather your questions and ask away! Once again, welcome!

Hello Alex and welcome! Lots of helpful people here.

Did you use a dechlorinator when you added your tap water?
