new fish addict in the making

Hi... it all started a month or so ago when i got a free aquarium with an office supply order... it was meant to be decorative, and came with fake plastic fish... and it only took a day or so for me to decide to try putting real fish in it. A couple of them died. Then I decided that maybe I would try getting a 10 gallon aquarium to move the remaining fish into, and did a whole lot of research in a short amount of time... and now, here I am. Completely addicted to learning everything i possibly can about having fish. I don't know how it spiralled so far out of control, but so far, I'm enjoying it.

I'm 27 years old, have a cat and a dog, and I've found out the hard way that fish are way more difficult to keep alive than the two seemingly more physiologically complex mammals that I've already got.

welcome to the forum.
a good place to start would be googling fishless cycle/nitrogen cycle and going from there. since you HAVE some fish, a fishless cycles out of the question unless you can return them for store credit and start again but it has been done with fish, just requires more water changes and patience. do partial water changes at a time ( like 10-20% the tanks volume ) a good thing to pick up is a freshwater testing kit that includes amm, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. i suggest API master freshwater kit and ordering online as its cheaper then stores.another investment is a tap water conditioner like prime.
glad you enjoy fish keeping and are willing to learn. theres lots of info and friendly people here.

Hello and welcome to the community! We have a lot of resources here on TFK, so be sure to read the stickies in the freshwater section especially as they may answer a lot of the questions you've got. For any others you still have, feel free to ask them!

I am finding out the very same thing. Turns out aquarium plants can give you a run for your money as well. I am glad to have another fish addict here as well. Welcome! I am a newbie as well but learn something new every day from the other fine folks on this forum. Hang around, you will learn a bunch.
