My name is fosschick, and I'm here to learn.

Hello everyone, it's very nice to meet you.

Allow me to cut to the chase and say that I purchased a male betta veil tail ("Rocko") at PetSmart, and immediately, well-intentioned-yet-ignorantly, put him in a 1/2 gallon betta torture chamber. (Un-filtered, un-heated, little "betta starter kit" plastic bowl type thing.)

The good news is that a fellow betta lover immediately saw my mistake on facebook, and the next day I purchased a Marineland Hex5 tank, and thus began my love of properly caring for bettas and other tropical fish! (Of course, I ignorantly stuck poor Rocko in there after letting it run for 24 hours but without cycling the tank, at all, but at least he's somehow alive and well 5 weeks later.)

These past 5 weeks have involved a lot of reading and learning, and have strengthened my love for Rocko and all fish. Hopefully I will be the responsible pet owner I should be from here on out.

Rocko is our only pet at this time. My family also includes my husband and our daughter, who will be starting kindergarten in July.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the forum. There is a betta forum that also belongs to this forum. Betta Fish and Betta Fish Care, I am a member on there as well.

Bettas are very rewarding fish, they have so much personality. You should share some photos of the new guy.

Good luck with the new betta!

Hey fosschick,

Welcome to TFK You did the right thing by Rocko. He'll be your buddy for a good long time now.

Bettas are full of personality and can become addicting. I started with a 5 gallon betta tank and now have 6 more 2.5 gal. betta tanks. I'd have 10 more if I had the room for them. :)

Looking forward to a picture of Rocko.

How about a video? :) (BTW there is at least 1 picture and 1 video of him on my profile....somewhere. Not sure how to get there, hehe.)

Here's a recent one, though. I put a couple freeze-dried bloodworms in there this morning before his weekly PWC, so here's a video of him eating them! :D

Sometimes he likes to hang out on top of his heater, so that's what that gray soft thingy is.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

May I offer a suggestion, having watched your video? Rocko would love some floating plants. Betta love cruising under floating plants, browsing their leaves and roots for food. Water Sprite is ideal, but if you can't find it, many stem plants will grow fine just left floating across the top.

Byron.
