Hello Aaron and welcome to TFK

We hope you like it here.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

It could very well be breeding activities. If you have a divider it might be a good idea to put the fish that is being chased in a section of the aquarium for a few days. Female can get pretty beat up by mating activities.

Also welcome! Loaches are some of my favorite fish! I love their personalities and antics. Right now I just have Pangio oblonga (black kuhli loach). What loaches do you have?
