sounds like your doing fine,and usually after the spike then the nitrates show,
is it planted ? that can make a difference.

when you set up a new tank,hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor,that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

I have one rotala indica in there as an attempt to slowly move it to a planted aquarium but there are still fake stuff in there. I am doing liquid and tablet fertilizer and i normally test the water 2 times a day morning and night just to see the effects in the water.

at the second attempt at keeping fish i bought a test kit,and i used to test twice a day,
i kept a journal on all my findings too,i found that helpful.
the more plants you have the better it is,don't be frightened by the thought of them,
that they may be detrimental to the cycle because they won't .

The hard part is that the only good Pet store that has plants is two hours away, can I buy them online and expect a decent purchase

yeah i don't see why not,i buy mine on line,there are plenty of people
on her who do,and perhaps in the for sale section on here you may find
someone selling some.
