Smile Hey All!

My son has been asking if we could get a fish. Cool. My husband and I had talked about getting fish at some point and our six year old is now asking. (Our extended family all have dogs and cats so it's cool to me he wants something different). I'm thinking maybe a betta so I'm snooping around here to see what I can learn.

Hello Canuck Fins

You won't regret a betta. If you haven't done so already, check out the sticky threads in the betta care section. You should go for at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter, submersible heater , a cave/sleeping spot and a silk plant, and a good water conditioner like Seachem Prime.

With the right conditions, your son will have a buddy for years instead of months. I have 6 of them myself.

Good luck and let us know if you have any questions along the way.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Welcome to TFK, Canuck Fins. We are glad you joined us and I think it's GREAT that your son wants a fish.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

Romad, I was lookin through the photos of betta homes and man, they are great! I think it's going to be fun for me to set this up. My son will get to name the fish, but I'll be the one doing the water changes and tank care so it's fun to look.

AuntKymmie, I haven't shown him a ton of pics yet but I think he'll love the betta.

Eatmysox, nice to see another Canadian. I worry sometimes that what people suggest online might only be US-found so it's good to see someone I can ask "local" stuff.

:)

BTW, Byron is in Vancouver. He is a mod and writes most of the profiles and knows all about growing plants so you've definitely got a good Canadian source of info on the forum.

hi and welcome.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
