Hello everyone! My names Jayden but for here just call me pig or skin, whatever your comfortable with.
I own a female crowntail betta named Leviathan who is only a few months old ( about 9 ) and im generally new to properly taking care of fish,
as my mom never taught or even knew how to take care of past fish we owned. Lately i've been really into caring for bettas and want to learn more about it.

For future reference my betta lives in a 2.5 gallon tiny petco tank with sadly only a filter. I plan to get her a proper tank with heating and a better filtration system once we have the money
and im currently trying to fight off a putrid algae thats been growing on her filter lately. We plan to get a nerite snail very soon to help deal with the annoying algae that keeps growing.

Welcome to the group.

As far as not knowing how to properly care for fish that is in the past we all have to start some where and we all made mistakes. Best thing to do is use it as a learning experience and work toward giving your current fish(and any you might get later) the best home you can.

Betta are great fish and they do get a lot of people into the hobby. I have keep them for years and might be my favorite fish ever, great colors, active, personally and just cool. I have used a lot of different tanks to keep betta in but for your "best bang for the buck" when they do the $1 per gallon sale pick up a 10g tank. If you wanted you could divide that tank and have 2 bettas or keep the one alone and make her fell like a queen for sure. Heck if you want to go nuts get a 20g long and divide it for 4 bettas. lol You will find the larger the tank the easier it is to care for, they are more stable and don't really cost more to run.

As far as the algae I know it isn't pretty but I let it grow in most of my tanks because it will remove the Nitrate from the water(very slowly but it helps) you can kill the lights for 3-4 days that will normally get rid of it or just scrub it off(what I do). Another good choice is Cherry shrimp, the betta might eat them but if you have hiding places they should be fine.

Hello and welcome. I have had bettas in the past, but now have a 20 gal with several tetras and corydoras.

You can totally spoil your betta in a 10 gal. I did that for a while. Bettas like to be warm (76-78F) and will be more active if not cold. As Warhawk has mentioned, limiting the amount of light your tank gets will definitely manage the algae growth. I don't know anything about snails and I only have problems with algae if I've left my tank light on too long - meaning too many days with more than 6 hours of light. Fish don't need as much light as plants - I do have a planted tank.

Another suggestion when you get a little more room for your betta, set up a hiding place for her. And if you want to try out plants, java fern is one that is commonly found in your LFS and is easy to grow. Bettas also like sitting on leaves to rest.

Hope you enjoy your new endeavour.
