Just stopping in here to say hi! My name's Denise, and I'm setting up my first planted tank (60 gal acrylic) so I think I'm going to have lots of questions for y'all. Looking at it now, it's just a heap of wood floating over some sand. Haha - there's a lot of work ahead.
I also have a 29 gal tank that's been going for a few years. Lately it's become plagued with a weird mold that grows only on the malaysian driftwood I have in there. I'm really ready for the new tank to be up and running so I can chuck the whole thing in the dumpster
Hi Denise, welcome to the forum, we're glad you decided to join us. Have you tried pulling the piece of Malaysian drftwood out of the tank and giving it a good boil?
About the driftwood: I don't have a pot large enough to boil it in. :/ The biggest thing I have a 12 quart stockpot, and I can only get about 1/3 of each piece of wood in it at a time. I need to invest in one of those giant pots that you see in the movies during orphanage kitchen scenes of gruel serving time.
I think it must be something about the wood though. The weird mold doesn't grow on the rocks or the fake plants in the tank.
My advice for the driftwood is with Kymmie....you could try and boil it...
I ran into the same problem, I went to Big Lots (not sure if they have those in Cali) I picked up a enormous stock pot....for $8..still only half fit, but I flipped it half way thru and my tank is really clear now!

We do indeed have Big Lots. I'll have to go check that out. I love that place anyways, so much random stuff. I always come away from there with at least one kitchy mug or piece of home decor. Thanks for the tip
