i've had aquariums since i was a kid, but i'm new to proper fishkeeping. 16 years ago my 10 gal had a relatively large fish- i think it was a jack dempsey, along with a 6in african frog and a +12in pleco. the only equipment was a small air-operated internal canister filter. there was gravel, but there was so much detritus the substrate appeared to be mud. everything was long-lived, but looking back, it was probably a miserable existance. after everything died the aqurium sat, ignored, with the detritus and water still in it for months.
i finally cleaned everything with a brush and peroxide, and refilled it. i made a few mistakes, like using cycle chemicals and adding fish the next day.
now its beautiful, a dozen small java ferns, java moss on rocks and driftwood, and a apon crispus hybrid as a centerpiece. i started with 4 guppies and now i have to give them away.
i look forward to meeting everyone. also, i check this on my phone, so grammar wont be perfect.
feel free to check my plant forum topic.
