Hi I just recently decided to build a 300-400 gallon aquarium! I currently have a 55 gallon salt water tank and love it! We are putting a new wall in to seperate a room in our basement and I am going to make it an in the wall fish tank. I want to have a planted discus tank! I have never had a freshwater tank more than 10g so I will need some help and suggestions! I have a few questions!
What is the best type of filter
Do I need a sump?
I want this to be awesome and I would love some advice!
I think this would be an appropriate time to say "holy balls that's awesome".
That's a pretty big step from 10 to 400.
I don't think you need a sump for a freshwater tank, just get a really big filter. I use Aqueon filters, but if you can find something better (and bigger) then use it.
As far as tank mates for the discus-
Discus, being cichlids, are territorial and need a space to call there own without being too disturbed. With a 300-400 gal tank though I don't think space will be an issue. Another issue would be food. I would suggest cardinal or lamp eye tetras, because they are not know to be big eaters and will leave plenty of food for your discus. If those fish aren't available or aren't to your liking, then any type of smaller tetra would be fine. Although I would avoid the Buenos Aires tetra. I have a few of them and they are rather aggressive and tend to nip at the other fish's fins.
Good luck with your new tank!
