Nitrite, not Nitrate?

If Nitrite is that high then that is certainly your problem. It should never be above 0ppm. I would do a massive water change. Have you gotten plants in yet?

The Prime will detoxify the Nitrite making it safer for the fish and adds a slime coat to help with the ich. Rasiing the temp will help kill the ich.

Tomorrow or even the next day you can do a light vacuum of the gravel to remove and dead ick that feel to the gravel (as in you just put the vacuum to the gravel and don't push down so you don't disturb it...takes practice but it works well). You should be picking any gravel up while doing this, you should only see small amounts of waste coming up. This will help cure the tank.

The best thing you can do now though is raise the temp and change the water with Prime.

Beautiful!! That's probably why all your ammonia is gone :). Yay!

That's going to make your tank so much healthier :)

btw, you should totally post up some pictures so we can see your tank! :)

Okay just got done reading this whole thread. It sounds like your tank was cycled and went through a mini cycle (maybe still is). With Nitrites that high (really showing up at all) I would definitely do a massive water change. I might even vacuum the gravel. It won't hurt the bacteria and cause your tank to cycle again as some suggested. It will however pull out nutrients for the plants. The same source of nutrients will most certainly be a food source for Nitrosonomas bacteria which is ammionia. Ammionia can be produced by waste, food or anything stuck in the gravel. You have plants and I know you just said you add java moss and jave fern. What other plants do you have. Fast going plants are really going to help you out the best here. By the way java moss and java fern are not fast growing plants. Also floating plants will be a hugh help.

Also I do think the problem is Ich but at the moment I would do a major water change. Would also raise the temp to safe levels that the fish can handle slowly. Then add the medicine back in.

hay gwynnie, your in the UK ?
what dechlorinator are you using,at water change time ?

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
