Talking Another Newbie Aquarium Keeper

Hello Everyone -

Yet another newbie here. I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada, and just set up a new tank that I got for Christmas from my wife.

The last time I had an aquarium was well over three decades ago. I was about 7 or 8 years old, and diligently cleaned my tank whenever mom asked me to. She wanted it spotless.

So, out came the fish, into a bucket of fresh tap water.
Out came the gravel I rinsed it and rinsed it until each pebble was squeaky clean.
Windex cleaned the glass tank nicely, and soapy water took all the algae off the plastic plants.

Everything was so pretty when I put the fish back in, along with nice clean tap water.

Until they started dying. Gee I wonder why that happened.

Considering that I was hell bent on destroying any sort of biological filter that ever developed in my tank, its a wonder that my Swordtails ever mated. I still remember the day when I noticed that my tank water seemed murky a closer look revealed a CLOUD of baby fish.

That was then, and this is now. Expect a lot of questions from me: Id like to think I can do a bit better now!

Hello and welcome to the forum

LOL on your story of cleaning. If only we had the internet when we first started trying to keep fish alive :)

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Time to say something that makes me sound like an old geezer: How is it that we ever made it through school without the internet? How did I survive my pre-teens, teens, and most of my 20's without a cell phone?

How am I still alive? It must be a miracle. HA!

I know 10-year-olds who complain about not having the latest iPhone 4G.

But yes, I'm happy to have the internet, and this forum and others like it, to make the aquarium learning-curve a bit less steep...

hello and welcome. :)

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
