5 Gallon Tank Ammonia Levels High, please hlelp!

Here are the specifics:

We got a 5 gallon Fluval Chi tank back on July 18, initially the Ammonia levels spiked in the new tank and then went down to 0 ppm, I have the API testing kit (liquid style) and have noticed over the past week or so the level of Ammonia has gone up to around 2 ppm - 4 ppm. All the fish seem very active, but I am uncomfortable with the ammonia level being that high.

I do a 10% water change every other day with peat moss filtered water to lower the Ph level slowly from 7.6. I noticed that when I changed the filter media (filter pad) it was extremely brown.

We have been feeding about twice a day, which we have now changed to once a day. We have 2 Cory Catfish, 1 Highfin Platy, 1 King Betta, 2 Snails, 1 Bubble Bee Gobi, & 1 African Dwarf Frog.

I've been using Ammo-lock about every 2 days as directed this past week. Any suggestions to lower the Ammonia level in the tank? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum first of all.

Sorry to say it but it will never go down with that bioload in the tank, there is simply not enough filtration to be able to handle that amount of fish and snails in the tank.
Those tanks are very hard to control anything in simply because the water volume is small.
My girlfriend has the same tank and keeps 3 male guppies in it, even then it struggles to keep the ammonia down. The need for DAILY large water changes is all that can be really done.

2-4 pm of ammonia in that size tank should be lethal to the fish, I am very surprised they have not succumb to ammonia poisoning.

10g Fry / Hospital / QT tank (as needed)

75g Saltwater Reef, Ocellaris Clownfish, Lyretail Antias (baby), Lemon damsel, Longtail Fairy Wrasse, purple dottyback, snails, crabs and a few LPS corals.

220g Still sitting empty (come on Lottery I need the numbers to come up!)
