Exclamation 3 hours till death

Me and my family have tried to start a aquarium, we have owned 7 gold fish, all died through the years from various causes. We have done all that was told by our pets story and bout several fishes. We did what was told and all seemed good. But after 3hours the 9 fish started to cunvolse and sink to the bottom, all died by morning. We thought the problem was because my dad had washed the bucket used to add the water with comet. So instead we dumped the tank, put in new water rinsed the rocks and details and rinse the tank, we tried again. But the two fish died at the bottom. when touched they cunvolsed then floated to the top. We would really like to know why the fish are randomly dying.

A filter does not start filtering when you first put it in...it needs to build up some good bacteria in it...I know its confusing and a bit misleading when you first start out...read the article if you haven't already..it explains things nicely.

As for your fish..it is odd that they all died that fast and convulsing so you may still some chemical in the tank due to the comet cleaning stuff...I'm not really sure what to do with that really other then keep rinsing and rinsing really really well and then let everything dry really really well

Good luck

It takes a month for a filter to 'cycle'. It takes hours for ammonia to build up and ammonia is toxic, so fish die.

.... I'm probably drunk.

This is how I lurk

Did you use water conditioner to remove chlorine from the water?were the fish introduced into the tank slowly (I.E. the bag was floated in the tank for 10 minutes or so,then some tank water addded to the bag, then left for 10 minutes or so etc etc)?.

Did you use water conditioner when you filled the tank, and if yes, which one?

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
