What type of live plants?

I have a 29 gallon tank with no inhabitants right now and would like to plant live plants. What type of plants don't require special lighting and are fairly inexpensive. Because this is the first time with live plants I'm assuming some might die so I don't want to pay too much till I know what I'm doing. Any other advice would be much appreciated as well. Thanks!

P.S. I assume that live plants will work with gravel?

you can try java fern or java moss as it does not require any special lighting
