Back when I began keeping fish, and Dinosaur's still roamed the earth,,that's about the only filtration there was .
Is effective form of filtration and perform's well. But after month's of operation, the space under the plate needs to be flushed out, or sucked out, as crud tend's to collect there which can have negative effect on water quality.
Canister filter for tank's over 30 gal would be my choice for ease of maint compared to the cleaning out under the plate of the UG filter.
Reverse flow undergravel filtration would be my second choice, where water is forced dow the lift tube with reverse flow Power head, or pump, and water is then filtered further with HOB filter or canister.
Just my two cent's.
Under gravel filter are terrific.....for dumping on someone when you sell a tank.
