Treating a new tank

Okay so i just bought my first two fish. They have been in the water for about thirty minutes. I conditoned the water a few days ago and tested everything yesterday and today before i put them in. However i dont know if i am supposed to put anything in the water to relieve stress on the fish now. Oh yeah and place that sold them to me put a tablet in the bag that turned the water blue. What is that? Help plase =]

How long is the tank been set up? If it has finished its cycle your fish should be fine. The blue pill, no it's not Viagra, is a stress reducer and oxygenator. It helps the fish to maintain their slime coat and prevent stress related disease as well as aid in breathing.

hey thanks! well its been set up about a week.. its new and i know ive done everything right so far up to this point.. my tank came in like a kit with a bunch of packages of things to start your tank out with.. it came with this stress zyme stuff but it didnt say when to use it or if you could put it in there while the fish were in the water..

I hate to be the one to break this to you but you really need to take those fish back to the store. Your tank is not ready for them yet. It needs to cycle to be ready. Search fishless cycle on here for more info. The stress zyme should be used as directed every time you put tap water into your tank to save the fish from the harsh chemicals in your water, and it also helps with their slime coat. I hope I have helped some.

You can cycle with the fish in, as long as you are good with water changes (10-20% each day).

What do you have for your two fish? They will probably be ok, just expect to be doing a 25% water change and testing regimen on a daily basis until the tank reaches the correct parameters (0 ammonia and nitrites, and less than 20 on the nitrates).

Well BillyVille i know i dont have to take the fish back. I tested all of my chemicals and i made sure everything was normal before i put the fish in so i dont see why i would need to wait any longer. According to the readings my tank is good to go. But thanks everyone! Your help is appreciated. Lets hope my new tank is a success!

Oh dont apologize! It's all good. My boyfriend said that that as long as the chemical levels are safe then the fish are safe to go in. He has been doing this a while and has quite a bit of experience with keeping fish tanks so I am sure hes right. So far my fish are doing great and don't seem to be undergoing any problems. Lets hope it stays that way!

Define chemical levels please...

The only thing you really should have (besides a 7.0) is a nitrate level to consider your tank established. But anyways, enough of that. Two fish are fine to cycle with (you never told us what you have in there though).
