hey all new to the forum and id like some help.

Im starting up a new 25 gallon tank that I would have only cichlids in. I have some experience with fish tanks. I currently have a 2 gallon aquarium with some small fish (needed small because i took it to and from college), and a larger tank when i was younger.

so what kind of cichlids are best for this size, how many can i fit, and which are compatible with each other? I would also like a catfish or 2 for some variety if possible. thanks a lot.

Hi, and welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.

Cichlids for a 25g are few and far between, but there are a few options. First though we need to know your water parameters out of the tap, meaning GH (general hardness), pH and KH (carbonate hardness, or Alkalinity). There would be no point in my suggesting dwarf cichlids requiring hard water if you have soft, or vice versa.

You can ascertain the above numbers from your municipal water supply folks, they may have a website. You don't need to spend money for a GH/KH test kit, as once you know these there will be no reason to test unless you go down the road of adjusting water parameters.

Byron.
