Setting up a simple 10 gallon tank

Hello all. This is my first post, so I'm not sure who all will see this but I'm looking for some help. I recently purchased a used 10 gallon tank to add to our growing collection. I want to put this one in our living room, but I don't want to put a lot of money into it. I have gravel, a filter, a heater, an overhead light and one medium sized decoration. Are there any tropical fish that don't require lots of plants or many places to hide? I'm looking to get maybe 5 or 6 fish. I want something lively and fun to watch. Maybe tiger barbs? I dont know a whole lot about those though. But any fish really would be fine with me as long as it is active. I'm not opposed to putting maybe $15 into the tank other than fish, but not a whole lot more than that. (only reason for that is we just got a 60 gallon as well and I want to deck that one out.) thanks for any and all help!!

Hi and welcome to the forum! If you want to explore fishy options, I suggest you look at the tropical fish profiles. The link is in the upper lefthand corner of the screen. You can also access the profile of a specific fish by clicking on the highlighted name of a fish you see in a post. Like this: tiger barb.

That being said, I don't think tiger barbs are the best choice for a 10 gal tank. It's too small for them as they are active swimmers. My idea would be to do a divided male Betta splendens tank. Dividers are cheaper to make than to buy and if you wanted to do live plants just take cuttings from your main display and add those.

Well after looking around some more last night I'm thinking about 4 guppies and a school of 6 tetras (not sure which kind tho) would this be okay?

I would leave out the guppies. As beautiful as they are, the ones from petstores are notoriously fragile from years of inbreeding. They are often sickly and disease-ridden. Instead get another 2 or 3 tetra of the species you choose. The bigger the school, the prettier and more active they are. One of my favorite tetra for a small tank are glowlight tetra. You can find them at most pet stores.

What about getting some guppies from an Aquarium store itself? Would that be any better or just as bad?

It's still the same problem. It's not just guppies from big chain stores, it's from most pet stores because they all get their fish from large commercial breeders. It's those commercial breeders that inbreed and have trouble with disease. If you wanted a tank with guppies, I'd suggest just getting them from a local breeder.

Either way, I'd go with either tetra or guppies. In small groups tetra can be nippy and long guppy fins make great targets. A 10 gal tank is best left as a single-species tank.

Another suggestion for if you do get guppies is to only purchase males. If you purchase females, you will have babies and they will overrun your tank.
