You folks must decide on what type of community tank you wish. African cichlids would be a good choice as they have diverse color. The tank would be similar to a salt tank in that there should be rockwork galore for the fish.
A true community tank would be impressive with plants, wood,rocks, and fish such as tetras, danios, dwarf South American cichlids and catfish like cories, farowellas, and dwarf bagrids. If you have the opportunity pick up some magazines, Tropical Fish Hobbiest is a real good one, and do some research.
You have joined the forum and that is a good thing. Check out some the other members' tanks for a few ideas.
