hi
personally i wouldn't turn the filter off,only for cleaning.
the food issuse,i would drop the pellets the furthest away
from the inlet pipe as possible.
oh yeah i ment to say about the broom handel idea,i think it's fab. :)

when you set up a new tank,hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor,that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

I almost always turn my filters off when feeding. Too much food gets sucked up otherwise. The filters are only off for about 5 minutes.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...
