Smile Pregnant platys

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and new to the aquarium life. I have 2 75 gallon aquariums. One is currently set up with several platys, 2 female and 1 male guppy, a placo and 2 gouramis (honey). My question to all is... I have several pregnant or I think pregnant platys. I have successfully kept about 40 fry alive by either catching them when they were very little or putting the females in a breeder tank prior to giving birth. However, I have not been that lucky as of late and end up stressing the platys to either abort or die. So I am not extremely excited about using the boxes anymore. But on the same note, I do not have new fry in the tank either.. So I am considering using my other 75 gallon tank for a birthing tank. I am considering moving the pregnant platy into the other tank when I am certain she is pregnant and putting ALOT of plants in the tank and then removing her after she has given birth. Any thoughts on this idea. Oh yes, I also have a 29 gallon tank I am using for the fry. Thanks much!!! Pam

I think moving the pregnant platy to a new birthing tank, (once properly cycled of course) and then planting it would be agood idea. this gives the fry places to hide, especially if you dont get the momma out right after the fry come. I have bred platys before, and its hard to know what to with them. some of my mommas eat their fry immediatly after birth, and some i can leave the fry in with them and they do just fine, no eating my the rents or anything. However if the fry have been eaten in the past by the same momma, i would move her, let her give birth, then move her back, and give the fry time to grow big enough to get away when targeted.
