I thought shops kept the genders apart so that couldt happen? I have swordtail which are livebearers and I save some once but the survival rate was really low and out of 27 only 5made it and now the birth rate is higher do to more females and they always give birth at night and so far only 2 out of alot survived so it must be a horrible nightmare at pet stores compared to mine

Wow! That's good to know that they can give baby fish away for free. I was wondering if Petco does the same or not. I went to Petco once and saw a bunch of baby mollies and wanted to buy them and they would not let me buy them. If I knew they were for free I would have taken them as I have spare tanks set up and I love the babies as you can watch them grow up and know their age. Wow you are going to be way over your head with excess babies to save. Maybe you can try to rehome some on craigslist for a small price. I'm sure that you will get people interested in raising tiny babies. I've rehome many fish on craigslist and i make it a pkg. deal and add some fish food or plant with each rehomeing of fish and I do get people picking them up. I'm so glad their are still caring people like you that care.

I don't know about you guys, but when I go to the LFS and see the baby fish, they really are cute. Especially the baby plecos, for some reason are just adorable. I can't believe they'd just give them away. Good for you for being persistant about this.
