Petsmart rescue idea :)

Well I am 100% opposed to spending money on ill-treated animals at stores, BUT when fish inside petsmart have babies, they are NOt allloud to sell the babies. Employies are supposed to wait until the babies are eaten, or sucked into the gravel vacuum or filter.... Well although they are not aloud to sell the babies, they ARE aloud to give them away! (I asked!) So my plan is to get a 20g (I'm not aloud to have larger currently) tank and set it up with sponge filters, and dividers if needed....(depending on fish types I might). I will go in maybe once a week and take all the babies that are there and keep them until the are large enough to be sold, than they will be taken to my LFS that takes VERY good care of all their creatures to sell. Sound ok?

If you arent planning on making very much mone it sounds like a good idea. I wonder if my LFS gives away fry for free? hhhmmmm... I am assuming you are talking about livebearer fry... most other fish dont usually have fry in pet store setups, but with livebearers it is kind of inevitable.LOL. Good luck with your little scheme :)

Yah, I wan't planning on making a profit, just enough to pay for themselves.... Well thanks! I have a bunch of mini critter totes that work great for really young fry, and when they get old enough I will move them up! And yah, I am talking about livebearer fry (mostly) but some cories sometimes pop up... and I'll take them too :)

hey vegan mama...I'm vegetarian too so I get the whole wanting to rescue thing. And it's deplorable the kinds of policies those damned pet store chains create for their convenience with no regard to the creatures in their care...

HOWEVER, and this is coming from a fellow vegetarian animal-lover, there are baby fish and baby creatures in my tank often that I never see. I just found out that my shrimp have been having the babies I've been seeing in their bellies during my water change tonight (my Java Fern is teeming with them)...and I've never seen a one of them because they get eaten so early on. So there is sort of a natural cycle of life going on here...

But that said, I'm glad there's people in the world like you who are motivated to do the kinds of things you do.

That sounds like a brilliant idea, congrats! I hate the way most pet stores treat their fish and animals, good for you for doing something about it! :) There is a LFS near me that you would not BELIEVE what goes on in there (I did some work experience there a few years ago and was horrified) and that was just with the animals, christ knows what they do with 'mere' fish.
Good luck with your plan, definitely keep us posted, I would love to know what fry you end up with!

thanks guys! Well.... I went and talked to them today, and I came home with 7 baby cories, 13 platies, a molly, and 3 guppies :)
