Party near the fish tank.... :(

It seems that I just might be starting up my 75 gallon tank tommorow (yaaay)!!!
BUT
My older brother is having a post homecoming dance party.

The problem here is that they will be in the same room.

At this point, I should have a few fish in there as I begin my TSS cycle.... what do I do about this? should I just cover the tank with a thick blanket to reduce the flashing lights and hopefully absorb some of the soundwaves? Or will it be fine without being specially covered or treated?

Why don't you set up the tank but wait until the next day to put the fish in? I am not sure if the music and party would effect them or not but thats what I would do to be on the safe side. And what do you mean by TSS cycle I am not familier with that term?

I just mean a cycle using Tetra SafeStart, where you add the fish and the voodoo chemical(bacteria) at the same time and it jumpstarts your cycle.

Oh ok I would not add to many fish at once sometimes the tetra does not work. What kind of fish are you planning on getting? Are you doing real plants or fake plants? Not being nosy I just love the fun of setting up new tanks.

ohh trust me i understand
its gonna be planted, hopefully densely, but we'll have to see how that works out.
I was planning to start with just the tetras because I was told that they are the most hardy of my not so hardy desired stock, which includes an angelfish, 2 blood parrots, and 4 cories along with the tetras.

Just wanted to add I got a really good deal on ebay today for some plants it was $20 includeing shipping and it was I think like 27 plants of 8 different kinds. I can give you the link if you like she had I think 5 groups that she was selling.

Cgassaway, welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.

On the cycling issue, I would plant the tank first before adding any fish; then adding a few fish after the plants are in with mean no cycle to speak of and thus less stress on the fish. No fish, however tough they may be as a species, will be unaffected by ammonia or nitrite so having the plants which eliminates both per say is preferable.

This also helps on the party question. Yes, fish do hear everything, and flashing lights will also be stressful. Especially in new surroundings with unstable water which itself is stressful. Less stress means healthier fish long-term.

"might" jump start your cycle. I am a complete disbeliever in any "cycle helpers". They might work, they will cost you though. Clone if you can, if not I always recommend doing fishless. Cycling with fish even if a "helper" does work for you it doesn't take a lot of ammonia or nitrite to harm a fish. This harm is also permanent. A cycled fish will never stay as healthy or live as long as an fish that has never been in a cycle. Also you are much more likely to have to deal with diseases by doing a fish in cycle and medicating a 75 gal is generally not very cheap.

As far as the party I agree with byron. In a mature tank it would be fine. I maintain my 55gal in a daycare and was watching a kid drive a large plastic truck along the glass yesterday. If a tank is going to be a loud and busy area it is best to start with larger fish first. It will always take a while for them to settle in, till then they are easily stressed out by noise and such. It helps if there are other mature fish that remain calm in the tank
