I want to get something a little different for my display tank and have been looking at either kribs or rams but am concerned about them killing my guppies. any chance either would leave my guppies alone? or is this just wishful thinking?

My kribs were generally peaceful until they started breeding. Given enough space, they'll only chase other fish away from where they're breeding and away from the fry once they're free-swimming. I don't think they'd actually kill another fish unless it was really persistent in its attempts to eat any eggs/fry. I had a guppy in the tank with the kribs while they were raising the fry and the guppy only ever ventured close once or twice, was chased away, and hasn't really been bothered since. I've read that rams can be just as aggressive during breeding as kribs. In general, I think both would probably make pretty good community choices.

Not to mention that guppies spend most of their time near the surface whereas both kribs and rams stay much lower in the tank for the most part.

There are fish like cories that don't seem to be capable of learning to stay away from an area just because another fish has claimed it. The problem is that kribs are territorial enough to actually harm the cories even though the cories would probably not harm their fry.
What it comes down to is you can't keep a breeding pair of kribs with cories although they are fine as long as they have not set up housekeeping.

I second that notion. I have my kribs with cories right now, and the cories just don't get it. The number of fry has certainly dropped since they became free swimming, and I blame the cories entirely. A lot of times they'd venture close to the fry group and one or both of the parents would give the cory a couple bites. The cory would then (usually, I might add) swim helter-skelter directly through the fry. When they were small, I would be willing to bet that more than a few became cory food this way. They definitely don't learn though. My kribs haven't done any real damage to the cories, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility. One of the reasons I'm moving the kribs to another tank.
