I just got a young Black Phantom Tetra and it is staying
on the left side, it won't go to the other side and it is
always facing the left. Is something wrong with it?
It can take fish some time to get comfortable enough to start exploring the tank. If you only have 1 tetra, that will exacerbate the situation as they are schooling fish that require a group to really be comfortable.
I have two other tetras in the tank. I am not able to have
many fish as I only have a 5 gallon tank. The new tetra
was fine for a few days then it started exhibiting this behavior.
The new one is really young, could one of the bigger fish
have done something to it? It won't go to the right side of
the tank and hides on the left side near the water filter.
Yes it sounds like that is indeed the problem. When fish are cramped they begin exhibiting unusual behaviors, as you are describing. I don't see a lot of options for you other than to get a larger tank or return the new fish.
Sadly neither is an option because I live in a small house with limited space.
I do however have a smaller tank that I used before I got the five gallon tank.
I could probably put the new tetra in that tank.
UPDATE: I may not have to do that, it suddenly
started swimming all over the place tonight.
