newby in need of advise..bullying fish

Hi I have had a 10 gallon tank for 2 months. 1 betta, 5 platys,3 tiger barbs, 4 neon tetras, 1 cory dory. All was well everyone seemed happy, and I love to watch them. I bought a tuxedo tail guppy ( I could not resist him) now 14 in a 10 gallon. after 24 hours someone had bitten off pretty much all of his tail. It is growing back but ever since he has become a bully. He especially picks on the plattys and 1 in particular. I hate to see it, when he gets really agressive the rest of the fish seem to become agitated as well. Any and all advise would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to TFK. There are many many things wrong with your setup the way it is now starting with tank size and the mix of fish that you have in there. The only fish that you have currently that will thrive in that tank is the betta. If you have lots of hiding places/plants you might be able to keep the neons but they should also be a few more in number.

What are the chances that you can get a much larger tank in the near future? Craigslist usually has a great selection of tanks for cheap money. If that's not an option for you, you should bring them back or rehome them.

Platys are livebearers and unless you have all of the same sex, you're going to have a lot more fish than what you have now.

Tiger barbs are too small for that tank - period. They need to be kept in schools of 6 minimally to cut down on agression and they are notorious nippers.

Corys are also a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 6 or more so they're not constantly stressed which leads to poor health and issues.

Your guppy is freaking out because he's stressed as well. Please check out the tropical fish profiles at the top of the main page to start getting an idea of the optimal conditions for each species of fish.

Sorry to be such a downer on your fist post but we are here to help.

Yes, we do want to help. Romad has mentioned the issues, and I must agree. The profile info on the Tiger Barb will explain what will happen soon if they are not removed.
