newbie needs info!

Hey there everyone. I'm new here and I need information please!

I've never had anything more than a fish bowl with a goldfish but I've always been fasicinated with tropical/fresh water fish.

I just turned 21 and I have my own place now so I wanted to put a aquarium in my room.

I was wondering what size tank should I get as a beginner? What kind of fish? How many fish? How to clean the tank and how often? Also what else I have to do to make sure my fish are healthy and exactly what ill need. I found a 55 gal tank in my area, would that be ok?

Any information is appreciated, please remember I'm as big of a noob as they come so please try to explain everything so ill understand.

Thanks,

Kris

Welcome to the forum, Kris. Congrats on getting your own place!
Your first tank? More congrats! What kind of fish are you interested in? There are so many to choose from and with a 55gl you'll have lots of options!

Yup about the right size. You see with that Volume, it gives you room for error on water quality being a beginner. Go to small and things go wrong quickly. The only thing i dont like about 55g's, is I find them too SKinny! they do make 75g's, same length just adds 6" in depth, which makes it look way bigger.

Can't go wrong with African Cichlids, so many to choose from, color can go with Lake Malawi, Want unique personality that will keep you entertained? Lake Tanganiki species is way to go. Or Community tank? Imagine a huge school of neon tetras and discus :)

Thanks for the warm welcome:)

Umm I don't have a clue what kind I'd want that's why I need help lol! I guess the easiest to maintain until I get used to everything? The 55 gal is sold now so that's out of the option now:(

Thanks so far for the help! Also what is a community tank? I was looking through pictures and the discus are very cool looking fish! They are a kind I would want!

I'm going to have to find another tank now, our local petstore is way too expensive. Does anyone know where I can find a good tank at a reasonable price? I'm in northen Alberta, Canada.

Thanks

Try Craigslist!

Community tank, is your easy going fish like Guppies, tetras, stuff like that. Community tank wont get along with African type of fish, and different water requirements.

check out Cichlid-Forum.com to check out the cichlids on different lakes, right on homepage they have profiles on left side to look at the species of fish.

Welcome to TFK, Kris.

You can't go wrong with fancy goldfish with a couple of dojo loaches and some mystery snails but that's up to you. I do hope to help you further whichever fish you wish to start with.
