New Tank-Colourful Recommendations ?

Hi there, I have recently moved house and I closed down my last tank, a few months on and I am almost fully cyled and trying to plan a tropical stocklist, bearing in mind compatibilities and tank size etc...
I had loads of barbs last time which prohibited many varieties and I would like to do things differently this time, my main objective being COLOUR !!!!

I have a 200l/43 gall tank and wonder if someone could recommend a few compatible and beautifully colourful fish to get me started ? (ph is around 8 )

Thanks so much for reading

Welcome to Tropical Fish Forum.

With basic [pH 8] and presumably matching harder water, livebearers are the obvious choice. Rift lake cichlids would also suit the water, and are colourful, but the 43g tank is (for them) limiting in size unless you choose very carefully; if you like these fish, I'll let a cichlid person offer suggestions as I am not familiar enough with species.

On the libebearers, the brightly colourful ones are platys and swordtails (lots of reds, oranges, greens, blues), mollies are black, white & black (dalmation molly). Guppies and Endlers have very colourful patterns. You can check out these fish on our profiles.

There are also some harder water fish that are not within the livebearers, such as Galaxy Danio (Galaxy Rasbora sometimes called), and a few of the tetra do well in basic water.

The only issue with livebearers is spawning and the tons of fry that you will have regularly if you have male/female fish or previously-impregnated females.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. Platies and mollies are fantastic - colourful, hardy and really easy to take care of. And guppies may be small, but boy they are stunning! I've got black widow tetras in with mine, and everyone gets along great. :)

There are some great tetras out there that do well in a community. And a shoal of them looks amazing - I have a second tank with a heap of neons - both the normal neon and black neon - and they are so pretty to watch.

Ah, the serenity......nothing more relaxing or beautiful to look at than fish gliding around their tank......
