:-D I'm thinking about setting up my 30 gallon fish tank but this time I'm thinking fresh water. It's a tall 30 gallon. I want to put a lot of plants in there and small fish. So far I have: tank, stand, lights, filter, water pumps, cleaning suplies, and sand from when it was a salt water tank last year. I want to do this right, and make this 30 gallon running good (without CO2). ANY IDEAS??? thanks in advanced

The sand from your sw tank, is it live sand or regular? You might want to test the salinity after the tank has water just to make sure that the tank doesn't have any salt remaining in the sand.

You can setup a nice planted tank without CO2. If you post a thread on the aquarium plants sub-forum here, there are several members who could help you with a low-tech system. Basically, that is where lighting is the main source of plant growth, along with some other stuff.

We can go into that here, or you might be able to get more help at the aquarium plants sub-forum located here: Aquarium Plants

I love new tanks! If you decide to not use the sand you have go with small gravel or if you want a gravel made for plants like Eco-Complete. For a light you can use a 6500 daylight flouresant bulb you can get them at most home improvement stores for about $8.00. There are lots of easy low light plants that would work in your tank. Some of my personal favorites are c. wenditt, smaller swords like E. Kliener Prinz, water wisteria, pennywort, green cambodia, there are also lots of stem plants that will work well I have quite a few but can't remember there names right now LOL. If you are not in a hurry to set up the tank I would order the bulk plants from sweetaquatics they are good plants at a good price or if your in a hurry aquariumplants.com is nice a little more expensive but fast shippers. There is also an aquabid seller that I have used that was very good I can pm you their info if you like.
As far as fish if you can give us your ph and stuff we can maybe suggest some great fish for you to look at.

That sand will probably not be good, as it should have been intended for marine tanks and will thus likely be calcareous. This you do not want in a freshwater planted tank as it will act contrary to the intent, unless it is a tank of livebearers only.
