glad you're getting on with him.
i have elodea in the pond with mine.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Thanks you guys. From what my neighbor told me is he was in a 40 gallon tank with 10 other goldfish and they all died except for him. I am quessing no water changes and bad care in general plus the over crowding effected his tail. I got a 30 gallon long tank today as well as two bunches of anacharis plants and a friend for him. I am thinking two in the 30 is good right? I have named him Gramps because hes the old one and the new one Pecas which is Spanish for freckles hes alot smaller but they seem to like each other. I will post some pictures in a little while once the air bubbles clear off the tank. I also put a decoration and some filter media from my tank into the large filter that came with the tank and added Prime for the water and will of course be checking the water daily. I also put a small heater that I had to heat the water just a little bit even though they don't need it I am going to be getting more plants in the future and they will need slightly warmer temps.

Kindest Regards,
Amanda

look forward to seeing the pictures,
i'd love to show everyone my fry from this year, but i don't think my camera would pick
them up,they have the colourings already.

Wow. Ten goldfish in a 40 gal. He might have some stunting. His tail really does look chewed. Almost like how some bettas will be tail-biters, but I have never heard of that with goldfish. Probably just years of bad care. Hopefully your careful care will help the little guy recover. Can't wait to see more pictures. Mine never seem to turn out as well as everyone else's.

Yeah when she told me that my first thought was poor fish then my next one was no wonder they died. The pics are in the picture section they are not very good because my camera is not working right I can normally get decent pictures but I think my camera is about to die on me. : (

Amanda
