I have no experience with cichlids, execpt for my old kribensis fish.....

I do know that some cichlids are ok to mix in with regular fish, I'm not sure if the keyholes fit into that group. I know that the bolivan rams will be alright and many people keep them in their tank.

Almost all tetras should be kept in groups (shoals) of atleast 6, I would up the numbers of your 3 tetra groups to keep them less stressed out.

one side note....the bolvians and neon tetras require slightly different water parameters. The pH for neons should be below 7.0, where as the rams like it @ 7.8.

what are your water parameters? Do you have a test kit to check these?

Keyholes are pretty friendly and should make good community fish, but in a tank of that size I'd be worried about having two potential pairs of cichlids. I think it would be safer to either stick with a pair of one species or a single specimen of both species.

What's your pH and hardness?

I agree on either one but not both cichlids in a 40g. A also agree on increasing the group size of the neons and rummys, the latter in particular; Hemigrammus bleheri are one of the best tetra for remaining in their shoal, and they like more company as do neons.

Two comments on the pH. First to add to Johnny's comment on the Bolivian Ram pH; this species is fairly adaptable and does very well in acidic water (mine is in pH 6.0-6.2 with < 2dGH) but can also manage in slightly basic (pH up to 7.8 and hardness up to 12 dGH), for the reasons mentioned in our profile on this species [you can click the shaded name for the profile]. Second, I would be careful with neons and rummys in basic water; the latter will not be as colourful, and this means something is not to the fish's liking.

I would not include guppies with any of these fish, simply because they are quite different. And they will reproduce rapidly if there are females.

Byron.
