low maintenance fish suggestions

So I was showing my dad's girlfriend my betta and she expressed interest in getting her own fish tank. I recommended she get a betta but I think she wants to get a couple fish. She wants something pretty low maintenance I think. I don't think she really knows all that goes into a fish tank but I think she will be willing to learn before she gets a fish. She loves animals and I trust her to do well by them.

She is away from home sometimes so needs a fish that can go at least 3-4 days without food (again, I recommended a betta). I don't think she wants to set up a huge tank, probably a 5.5 or 10 gallon.

She seems to really want blue fish.

Any recommendations?

We will need to know water parameters (GH, pH of her source water) to suggest possible species. Not much will work in a 5g, and even a 10g is pretty small space. So this leaves us with the dwarf species of which most have fairly defined preferences for water, hence the question.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. guppies i suppose. Endler's livebearers if you can get hold of them. Just make sure to get all males.

imho, there's very little difference, size-wise between a 5gal and 10 gal -- go for the latter.

I'd say double the water volume is a pretty big difference....

That being said, unless she has really soft water five blue male guppies in a planted 10 gal could be a really nice setup. Most other blue fish are shoaling fish, and the ones that can fit in a 10 gal are pretty sensitive and by no means low-maintenance. You should really try to convince her to get a betta in a 5 or 10 gal as that honestly seems like the best option to me.
