Koi near death

Okay so I "rescued" a koi fish from a lady that came into the store I work in. She had been sold a koi (by one of my co-workers who is an idiot) to live in a 55g tank with 6-8 goldfish. Dumb, right? Yea, I thought so too. So anyway, I bring the koi home and make a make-shift "pond" for him to live in until I can get him to someone with a pond.

Oh and I rescued him because the lady wanted to kill him instead of trying to find him a new home. Well I brought him home and set up a plastic tub on my deck (in the shade) that is the equivalent of a 15g. I treated the water with Amquel + and floated the bag for about 30 minutes. I released him into the water and all seemed fine until I woke up this morning to check on him and he was floating, barely alive. I removed him from the water and placed him in some water I had treated earlier. I'm wondering if there was anything in the plastic tub that was toxic (I sprayed it out. It had been used to hold various household things (not cleaners though I'm wondering if it got air freshener in it at some point). So he is in clean, treated water, but he's not improving. He is laying belly up. He looks like he is trying really hard to "breath" through his gills. I feel bad because I was supposed to rescue him from what he came from before and now look at him, he's almost dead. He is a small koi. Only about 4-5 inches long. He was supposed to be going to a pond today.

I had the water tested. The pH was a little low at 6.6, but there was no ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate (water was brand new as it was only supposed to be a temporary thing until the koi went to someone else. Few days at most)

Any updates? It might be best to get him into a pond as soon as possible.
