Kuhli loach i think, maybe some other type of loach. I'm not a pro on the types of loaches but it looks just like my kuhlies.

I just get a few pest snails a week from the pet store, they eat snails and whatever else they can find

Looks like a kuhli loach or very close relative to me. Mine don't touch snails. They eat pretty much any sort of food that lands on the bottom of the tank, including flake, crumbles, shrimp pellets, frozen brine shrimp and blood worms and live blackworms.

Yep, kuhli loaches :) I love these fish - and find that they fare best when kept in large groups. Give them plenty of hiding places, and they also like planted tanks. Great fun to watch and when kept in a large group you'll find they will venture out in the open a lot more often.

Make sure you have some sinking food in order that the mid and top dwellers don't scoff it all before the kuhlies have a chance to feed :)

I'm afraid I wouldn't feel comfortable keeping them on that substrate- they need something smoother or their whiskers will wear down.
