) I will be switching my fish from my 35 gallon tank into a new 72 gallon bow front.
So the question of the day is what to do with the soon to be empty 35 gallon tank. I already have guppies, platies, cories and danios and I want something totally different.
You could do what I did with my new 20 gallon. I put real plants in it which look really nice but I am still trying to find a different type of fish like you. I have guppys, playts, swordtails, corys, and male and female Bettas. Maybe a female Betta tank would be something you could try. I have a 10 gallon set up for my girls and they look very pretty. If you decide to try them I suggest going to the Betta section on here and read about them here: http://www.fishforum.com/betta-fish-care/female-betta-sororities-29402/
you could have a pair of breeding convict cichlids that would work well in that tank, but then you will have to deal with convict fry to get rid of.......Most fish stores wont give you anything for them, but its a neat experience raising them, but other fish wont work out well with a breeding pair of them........they will be aggressive with fry in the tank.......You could try a pair of Kribenis or apistogrammas also.....they stay rather small and most varieties are colorful...........A few suggestions of the top of my head.....whatever you decide on, just continue to research water parameters and compatibility with other fish for your chosen species...........Good Luck and congrats on the tank upgrade!
I saw bolivian rams at the store recently and really liked those. What would go with those and how many could I have? What kind of tank decor do they prefer?
Research. Google information on the species and their water requirements.
Relying on opinions offered here or other forums often brings confusion. Too many differing opinions as to what will work with what. There are people here who belive it's ok to keep fish in unheated unfiltered bowls.
Published books however, are edited before printing for content ,and accuracy. A quick trip to the book store ,or public library, can save you money and dissapointment . I am troubled by the numbers of people that won't invest the time to research the fish they intend to keep but rather,, expect others who may not be all that knowledgeable ,,to provide them with the information.
When I began keeping fish ,there wasn't any internet and the advice was all just other peoples opinions. This proved to be costly both financially and with numbers of fish lost.
Today,, For someone like me who loathes most everything about computers,, I would be a fool not to take advantage of the information at my fingertips. The fish I care for deserve the best that I can provide and so I fumble my way to the information that is out there just waiting for a few clicks on the mouse pad.
I totally agree that other peoples opinions could never replace solid research and it is definitely not my intention to do so. Just looking for some friendly input.
You'll find a lot of conflicting info on the internet too. You'll just need to do lots of research and kind of sift through it.
I like willieturnips idea of keeping your current fish where they are and making the 72 gallon a cichlid tank. But do lots of research on them first. Decide whether you want African or American cichlids.
These guys are pretty and different I plan on putting a few in my 20 gallon planted tank they are anout $13.00 a piece at the LFS but I really want them. LOL

Thank you I was like Red and wanted something different for my newest tank so I went into an awsome local family owned fish store and told the owner Dave I wanted something peaceful and different and he said I got in the perfect fish for you today. When he showed me I knew it was for me. Now if my tank will finish cycleing I will add them to it. LOL
Change to saltwater After gaining enough experience I plan on starting a saltwater tank, the fish are amazing!
